I love Dominican People!

08/05/09 10:45

I really love Dominican People.

They are the friendliest, most open people in the world! A Dominican person will accept you as you are. No matter if you're thin or fat, cool or kind of geeky, you're beautiful anyways. And you're a friend. Each and every person is allowed to have his personality, his thing, his moods. You are accepted and not criticized.

In the D.R. you're chatted up by total strangers immediately. You talk to a person on the street or greet strangers, and you will get no weird looks. People will always respond and help you.

Here's a story.

A few years ago I was traveling around the D.R. By bus. In Santiago Rogdrigues. I had some time in between buses.
Feeling kind of scraggly beside all those gorgeous-haired girls, I decided to get a haircut. Walking around, I came upon a family sitting in their patio. I stopped and asked where the next hairdresser was.

The Dona of the house immediately invited me in, served limonada, and introduced me to her whole family (9 persons). She sent her youngest daughter Glenys to investigate about a salon. In the meanwhile I was offered some empanadas (yum). The local salon was closed, so the Dona sent her middle son Luis to look for the hairdresser to open the shop for me.

So I got my head massage, haircut and blow dry for about US$ 10.00 (plus cafecito with cookies). Of course, the Dona +  3 children escorted me back to the bus to make sure I did not get lost. I had to promise to visit each time I passed through the town.
Talk about friendly!!!

Another time...
I was sitting with Jose in a local restaurant. There were other guests, all peacefully eating their lunch. I said how I loved the openness of the people here. He said: "Si, you're right. Want a demonstration?"
He turned to the general direction of some other guests and made a loud comment about the current baseball season. Immediately ALL the other people answered, and a lively conversation erupted all around. Nobody knew each other, and nobody found it strange.

My friend winked at me and said: "See, we are communicative! Nobody is ever lonely. We are all amigos!"
